The CariVu system bathes teeth in near-infrared light in order to reveal decay: a process known as transillumination. The light makes normal, healthy tooth enamel appear transparent white, while tooth decay will trap the light and appear darker. This detection method can be used in conjunction with other detection methods, like traditional x-rays and intra-oral photographs, to provide the highest level of accuracy.
